How to Create an Ebook Cover Automatically: 5 Tools Compared

Search for a way to make an ebook cover automatically and you will find two kinds of tools: cover editors that help you design a cover for a book you have already written, and ebook makers that create the cover along with the book. Which one fits depends on what you still need to make. This guide compares five options and gives you a simple check for any cover before it goes to a store.

Cover editor or ebook maker: which do you need?

There are two kinds of tools behind "make my ebook cover automatically". Cover editors help you design a cover for a book you have already written: you pick a template or an AI concept, then adjust the title, images and layout. Ebook makers create the cover as part of making the book, from the same idea.

If your manuscript is finished, a cover editor gives you the most control. If the book is still an idea, a tool that plans the chapters and designs the cover together saves you a hand-off and keeps the title, subtitle and cover in step.

A generated image isn't a finished cover until the title reads clearly at thumbnail size and the file meets your store's rules.

Five tools compared

  • Canva: AI-assisted book cover concepts from a short description, plus a full editor for type, images and layout. Best when you want hands-on control. You still choose the concept, set the typography and export the file.
  • Book Brush: a cover creator made for authors, with templates and image layers. Best when the book is written and you want a genre-style cover. You arrange the elements yourself.
  • Adobe Express: book cover templates you can customise, or a cover built from scratch. Best if you already work in Adobe tools.
  • Amazon KDP Cover Creator: layouts and fonts inside KDP's publishing flow. Best if you only sell on Amazon, since the cover lives in KDP.
  • 1MinEbook: plans the chapters, writes an editable draft and designs a cover with your title, subtitle and name, all from one sentence. Try a new direction if the first one doesn't fit, fine-tune the colours and title font, then download the cover as a 1,600 × 2,560 px JPG (Pro).

The first four are cover tools: use them when the cover is the whole job. 1MinEbook is for when you need the book itself, with the cover included.

What to check before you keep an automatic cover

  1. Read the title at thumbnail size. Shrink the cover to the size of a store grid tile. If you have to zoom to read the title, simplify.
  2. Check the contrast. Light text on a dark background (or the reverse) reads best when the cover is small.
  3. Keep one focal point. A big title, or one strong image, beats a busy collage.
  4. Match what readers expect. Look at the best sellers in your category and make sure your cover signals the same kind of book.
  5. Check the rights. Make sure you can use every image and font commercially.
  6. Check the file. Each store has its own size and format rules (below).

Store cover sizes at a glance

  • Amazon KDP (Kindle ebooks): JPEG or TIFF in RGB colour, ideally 2,560 pixels tall by 1,600 pixels wide (a 1.6:1 ratio), at least 1,000 × 625 pixels, and under 50 MB.
  • Apple Books: JPEG or PNG in RGB colour, at least 1,400 pixels on the shorter side. Don't enlarge a smaller image to reach the minimum; blurry covers are rejected.
  • Gumroad, Etsy and your own site: no fixed book cover size, but a 1,600 × 2,560 image works well as a product image. Check how each platform crops its thumbnails.

Store rules change from time to time. Check the current help page before you upload.
