How to Publish an AI-Assisted Ebook on Amazon KDP, Step by Step

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is free to use and puts your book in front of millions of readers. Here’s the whole process, including the AI-content question everyone asks.

Step 1: Set up your KDP account

Sign in at kdp.amazon.com with an Amazon account, then complete your tax interview and bank details. You can’t get paid until both are done, so do this first.

Step 2: Prepare your files

  • Manuscript: EPUB or DOCX. Both export directly from 1MinEbook.
  • Cover: a JPG, ideally 2,560 × 1,600 pixels (height × width), a 1.6:1 ratio.
  • Description: 150–300 words that open with the reader’s problem and close with the promise.

Step 3: Fill in book details

Your title and subtitle are your most important keywords. A clear subtitle like “A 10-Week Plan for Lasting Strength After 40” helps the right readers find you.

Pick two categories that match where similar successful books are listed, and add up to seven keyword phrases readers would actually type.

Step 4: Answer the AI-content question honestly

Amazon asks whether your book contains AI-generated content (text, images or translations). If AI created content, even if you edited it afterwards, answer yes. Content you wrote yourself and only used AI to brainstorm or polish counts as AI-assisted and doesn’t need to be declared.

Declaring AI-generated content isn’t shown to customers and doesn’t block your book. Answering inaccurately can risk your account, so always be honest.

Step 5: Choose pricing and KDP Select

To earn the 70% royalty rate, price your ebook between $2.99 and $9.99. Outside that range you earn 35%.

KDP Select gives you access to Kindle Unlimited readers and promotions in exchange for 90 days of digital exclusivity on Amazon. Great for fiction and broad topics; skip it if you want to sell the same ebook on your own site.

Mistakes that get books rejected or ignored

  • Cover text that doesn’t match the title on the listing
  • Missing or misleading AI-content declaration
  • Low-value content: very short books stuffed with filler
  • Keyword stuffing in the title or subtitle
  • Publishing many near-identical books at once

After you hit publish

Review usually takes up to 72 hours. Once live, ask early readers for honest reviews (never pay for them), and share your Amazon link with your audience and email list.
