PDF vs EPUB vs DOCX: Which Ebook Format Do You Need?

Choosing the wrong file format is the most common reason a finished ebook gets rejected by a store or looks broken on a reader’s phone. Here’s what each format is for, in under five minutes.

PDF: looks identical everywhere

A PDF locks your layout in place. Every reader sees exactly the same pages, fonts and spacing. That makes it perfect for:

  • Selling directly on Gumroad, Payhip, Etsy or your own site
  • Lead magnets delivered by email
  • Workbooks and anything people might print

The trade-off: on a small phone screen, readers have to zoom and scroll because the text doesn’t reflow.

EPUB: the standard for ebook stores

EPUB is a reflowable format. Text adapts to any screen size and readers can change the font and text size. It’s the format ebook stores and reading apps are built around.

  • Apple Books
  • Google Play Books
  • Kobo
  • Amazon KDP (accepted for Kindle ebooks)

DOCX: the editable master copy

A Word file is your editable source. Use it when you want to make final changes in Word or Google Docs, hand the book to an editor, or upload to Amazon KDP, which accepts DOCX for ebooks.

Quick answer: which should I export?

  • Selling on your own site or Gumroad? PDF (add EPUB as a bonus for e-reader fans).
  • Publishing on Amazon KDP? EPUB or DOCX.
  • Apple Books, Kobo or Google Play? EPUB.
  • Lead magnet? PDF.
  • Want to keep editing? DOCX.

1MinEbook exports all three from the same book, so you never have to reformat anything by hand.
